Dr. Sitansu Sekhar Jena, born on 27th Oct. 1960, obtained his Post Graduation degree in Education from Utkal University, M.Phil, (Education) from Kurukshetra University, Haryana. He was awarded Indian Council for Social sciences Research (ICSSR) doctoral fellowship and completed his Ph.D. in Education from Institute Of Social Economic Change (ISCE), Bangalore through the University of Mysore in the area “Inequality of Educational opportunities”. He joined as one of the faculty members in the school of Education, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi at its initial stage. Subsequently, he worked as Regional Director of the Regional Centres of IGNOU at Shillong, New Delhi, Patna and Bhubaneswar. He also worked as member of faculty for about four years with a World Bank sponsored project for training of primary teachers using satellite based technologies under DEP- DPEP of IGNOU.
He also worked as Dean School of Distance Learning; SVKM’s NMIMS University, Mumbai and helped the institution in establishing its national wide distance learning programmes. Prior to joining the present assignment as Chairman, NIOS, he worked as the Director, Distance Education Programme (DEP) of IGNOU for training of teachers at elementary level under Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) of Govt. of India through Open and Distance learning mode to achieve the goals of education for all.
Dr. Jena has the distinction to be awarded with the association of Commonwealth universities (ACU), U.K. academic fellowship to work on a project related to the ‘External Teacher Education Programme’ offered by the University of Nairobi, Kenya.
He also participated in many International conferences and noteworthy among few are International Council of Distance Education (ICDE) conference held at Dusseldorf, Germany and Pan-Commonwealth Forum (PCF4) at Ocho Rios, Jamaica in Nov.2006 and PCF5 at University of London in July 2008 organized by Commonwealth of Learning (COL).
He was also a member of the Govt. of India Delegation to Australia and New Zeeland to study the VET system in the countries during January 28 Feb. 06, 2010. He has to his credit about 3 publications in various journals of repute and books edited by authors.
